2010 LIOINS CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT FEATURES
Our 2010 Featured Charity is the Whatcom Hospice Foundation. The Lion's share of the proceeds from the golf tournament will go the them. The balance will go into our general charity fund that is used to support a wide variety of community projects and organizations. Among these, are the following: 1. We provide eye exams, frames and lenses at no charge to the needy in Whatcom County. In the past 10 years, we have provided this service for over 750 recipients at a cost of approximately $75,000. We also collect and sort by prescription old eyeglasses for shipment to third world countries such as El Salvador. 2. We provide hearing exams and hearing aides at no charge to the needy in Whatcom County. In recent years we have provided approximately 600 exams and hearing aids at a cost of over $200,000. We also collect old hearing aids for refurbishing and reuse by needy recipients. 3. We operate the Wheelchair Warehouse where we collect, refurbish and make available at no charge to Whatcom County residents power and standard wheelchairs, walkers and other durable medical equipment required on a short-term basis. Currently, we have about 1,700 items checked out to about 900 people. 4. We sponsor the annual Christmas Ship that brings Santa Claus and the spirit of Christmas to the children of the San Juan and Gulf Islands. We provide organization, manpower and funds for this event each year. 5. We have provided many items for the Civic Field complex with proceeds from the concession stand that our club has operated there for over 30 years. These include: a scoreboard, a high jump and pole vault pit, many other track improvements, and a lift for the disabled at the aquatic center. 6. We have supported many Bellingham School District projects including: a scoreboard for Sehome High School, equipment for the weight room at Squalicum High School, band outfits for Bellingham High School, college scholarships for graduating high school students, and sponsorships of middle school children to participate on the annual Snow Goose trips to explore our marine environment. 7. We participate by funding our Multiple District Camp Horizon located at Birch Bay, WA. We provide manpower for the upgrading and maintenance of the complex and also sponsor camperships over the summer for the developmentally disabled in Whatcom County and B.C.'s Lower Mainland. 8. We have provided funding for many special projects within our community including: construction of the new Agape Home and remodeling of Lydia Place for homeless women and children, kitchen equipment for the Lighthouse Mission for homeless men, and sponsorship of Lions Grant for hearing impaired equipment at the Mount Baker Theatre. 9. We administer the Haskell and the Ty Hardan Funds which contribute to many worthwhile projects in our community including: equipment for a Low Vision Clinic for the sight-impaired, funds for eye surgeries for those unable to afford them, and hearing amplifiers for hearing impaired children. |
