Lions Books for Kids
Supporting youth literacy right here in our community
Books for Kids
Bellingham Central Lions have kicked off a new project called “Lions Books for Kids”. The intent of this project is to improve the reading and comprehension skills of children in Whatcom County. To accomplish this, the Lions will collect gently used or new books and provide them to children in need of additional reading resources, such as those in Women Care shelters, Boys and Girls Clubs, Homeless programs and others who may not have their own reading materials at home.
You can help!
The Books for Kids program brings free books and literacy resources directly into our community. We partner with local schools, hospitals, food banks, libraries, and housing communities to share everything from a small bundle of books to large events distributing more than 3,000 books, reading glasses, and art supplies.
What We Bring
Every event includes children’s books, plus a small selection for adults and teens. Depending on the setting, we also offer reading glasses, stuffed animals, and art supplies such as coloring books, drawing tablets, crayons, and colored pencils. Kids receive a Lions string bag or grocery bag to carry their items home.
Where the Books Come From
Most of our books are donated by community members—new boxes arrive every few weeks. We also purchase hard‑to‑find items like board books, early readers, and foreign‑language titles. Peoples Bank has generously supported these purchases through grant funding for the past two years.
How We Stay Organized
Every donated book is cleaned, labeled, and sorted. Our collection is organized into totes by age level (board books, picture books, grades K–6) and by themes such as holidays, science, history, and animals. This makes it easy to grab exactly what we need for each event.
